 Mutations of RNA polymerase II activate key genes of the nucleoside triphosphate biosynthetic pathways
How ribonucleotide shortage, which impedes transcription in general, nevertheless increases transcription of key NTP biosyntheses genes, is an intensely investigated open question. Intriguingly, a yeast screen by Kwapisz et al. now suggests that not only the promoters of such genes, but also RNA polymerase II itself may act as sensors of NTP depletion. |
| Phosphorylation of 4E-BP by LRRK2 affects the maintenance of dopaminergic neurons in Drosophila
Yuzuru Imai and colleagues report that LRRK2, which is associated with Parkinson's disease, phosphorylates 4E-BP and show that this is important for the in vivo pathogenic effects of mutant dLRRK in Drosophila. The findings support a novel mechanism linking deregulated protein translation to stress sensitivity and neurodegeneration in PD. |

Using an inner ear-specific deletion of the channel subunit Barttin, Thomas Jentsch and coworkers elegantly show that dysfunction of outer hair cells underlies a congenital hearing impairment, by abolishing the driving force for potassium influx. |
